This document is available in the Google Search Central documentation area. It is divided into the following sections:

When the server that hosts the site answers a request from a client, such as a browser or a crawler, it generates HTTP status codes. Although each HTTP status code has a unique meaning, the request’s conclusion is frequently the same. There are several status codes that indicate redirection, for example, but the result is the same.

What stands out.

There are a couple of things that strikeout to me as novel or interesting:

(1) If your redirects fail after 10 hops, Google will examine the URL with a redirect error in Search Console.

(2) 301 vs 302 redirects; According to Google, a 301 redirect is a strong signal that the redirect target should be canonical, but a 302 redirect is a weak signal.

(3) The 200 status code ensures that the page is sent to the indexing pipeline, but it does not guarantee that the page will be indexed by the indexing system.

Why we care.

Previously, Google had not gone into such detail on HTTP status codes, network, and DNS issues. We’ve heard bits and pieces from Google in each scenario. But here’s an official Google guidance on how these affect the performance of your site in Google Search.

It’s a good idea to print it out and distribute it to your SEO and server teams.
