Google changes Core Web Vitals metrics

But there’s more to come; the second portion of the core update, dubbed the July 2021 Core Update, will be released next month.

The Google June 2021 Core Update started trickling out around 6:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, June 2, 2021, but the industry buzz was not at core update levels. In other words, SEOs who track these changes didn’t really say this was a huge update, and I still believe that on some level this morning.

The rollout did accelerate up Saturday night (in terms of SEO talk. SEOs noting the core update) and continues today. But it is still not at the levels I would expect for a major core upgrade. It reminds me of the core upgrade from September 2019 that took a few days to notice after a sluggish rollout.

Google has traditionally published a major algorithm update every few months or so. The previous core update, the December 2020 Core Update, was slightly over six months ago. Prior to that, the May 2020 core update, which took place on May 4, 2020, had been seven months. So this one took a lot longer to roll out than prior upgrades, but we should have another one in about a month.

Two core updates.

Why is Google releasing two separate core updates one month after the other? Some of Google’s planned changes for the June 2021 update aren’t quite ready to be deployed this month, according to the firm. As a result, Google has opted to go ahead with the components that are available now, with the remainder coming next month in the July 2021 core update. Google will keep us updated on the release date of the July 2021 core update.

“Of course, every core change can result in content drops or gains. Because this is a two-part release. It’s likely that a tiny portion of the material will change in June and then reverse in July,” Google added.

What to expect.

Your rankings may go up, down, or stay the same following any Google algorithm update. However, if you were affected by the June 2021 core upgrade, the impact may be reversed with the July 2021 core update. Most sites won’t notice the changes, according to Google, but SEOs that manage a lot of sites will likely notice a lot of changes in the Google search results. Also, because this is a two-part release, it’s likely that some information and sites will change in June 2021 and then reverse in July 2021.

This will be a global deployment that will affect all languages and will take approximately two weeks to complete. When the deployment is complete, Google will announce it, which should be before the mid-June page experience change.

The announcement.

“Later today, we are issuing a broad core update, like we do numerous times every year,” Google wrote in a tweet announcing it. The June 2021 Core Update is what it’s named.

Roll out started later today.

Google has informed us that the June 2021 core update will begin rolling out later today, on June 2nd. Google claims that any major upgrade takes one to two weeks to fully roll out.

Previous updates.

The December 201 core update was the most recent previous core update, and it was even larger than the May 2020 core update. Then there came the May 2020 core upgrade, which was massive. Comprehensive update that took a few weeks to properly roll out. Before that, there was the January 2020 core update, which we discussed more here. The core update from September 2019 was the one before that. Many SEOs and webmasters thought the upgrade was weaker than prior core upgrades because it didn’t have as much of an impact. In November, Google released another upgrade, this time focused on local rankings. More information regarding previous Google upgrades can be found here.

What to do if you are hit.

In the past, Google has offered suggestions on what to do if you’ve been harmed by a core upgrade. There are no precise steps to follow to get back on track, and a drop in rankings may not indicate anything is wrong with your sites. If your site is affected by a core change. Google has provided a list of questions to consider. According to Google, there is some recovery time between core upgrades, but the major shift comes after another core update.

Why Google releases these updates.

In conjunction with the June 2021 core update. Google published a blog post explaining how and why it makes these changes to search. Google claims to receive “billions of requests every day from countries all over the world in 150 languages,” according to the company. To remain competitive and service its user base, it must improve. Google stated, “Delivering outstanding results at this scale and complexity requires many different systems. And we’re continually exploring ways to improve these systems so we can provide the most useful results possible.”

The internet is expanding, sites are changing, and new stuff is being released all the time. “As new sites appear and the web evolves,” Google added, “continued upgrades are critical to ensuring we’re supporting a diverse range of publishers, artists, and companies while providing searchers with the most up-to-date information.”

Google is constantly releasing changes as a result of this. Indeed, Google has stated that it may “implement dozens of modifications that are aimed to improve Search in incremental ways” in any given week. As a result, the company will not be able to “share details about all” of the updates. However, Google claims that it makes an effort to announce major core updates like these.

Why we care.

When Google modifies its search ranking algorithms, your site’s ranking in the search results may improve or deteriorate. Knowing when Google makes these modifications gives us a reference point for determining. If the change was due to something you did on your website or something Google updated with its ranking algorithm. Google is expected to release a major ranking upgrade today, so keep a watch on your statistics and ranks.
